Overview
This loop skips between the border of Germany and Austria as it ascends to the summit of the Spitzstein. From the top, there are beautiful views of this area that transitions from lower pastures to higher alpine peaks.
Description
The route begins from a pull-off parking area just north of Bergfeldstraße. The first half climbs, fairly steeply at times, through thick, dark stands of forest. Higher up, the forest begins to thin out with swaths of green meadow taking over.
The trail can be wet and muddy if there has been any precipitation in the last day or two. After one and two-thirds miles from the start, the trail comes out to a gravel doubletrack that climbs for one switchback to a private cottage.
From here, continue heading up for another 0.8 miles to the top. Being one of the most northerly peaks heading into the Alps, this mountain provides a great view south into the dramatic peaks and north to the flatter pastures of Bavaria and the large Chiemsee.
From the top, head down on the trail as it heads south toward two restaurants. Both lie around 0.8 miles down and are hard to miss. Kick your feet up for a warm meal and cold beer before the final 2.6 miles through a couple farms and a quiet corner of Sachrang.
