Description

Entirely alpine, this track persists above the tree-line to offer mind-blowing views in every direction - a sea of mountain tops marching endlessly to the north and west with the Wairarapa plains below you to the east. This trail offers some of the best hiking in the North Island and is a jewel in the crown of the Tararua ranges.

Leaving the Jumbo Hut, the track climbs briefly up to Mt. Jumbo before turning south toward Mt. Holdsworth. Descending a brief saddle between the two summits, the track will cross a few sections that hold moisture year-round.

The climb to Mt Holdsworth is broken into two segments with a slight reprieve across a short tussock plateau. The Mt. Holdsworth Trig is a 2 minute detour well-worth effort for the photo opportunity.
