“A route featuring beautiful island trails in Les Cheneaux islands, MI.
”
Family Friendly
Good swimming and wading along Government Bay provides a treat for all members of the family.
Government Island is only accessible by boat.
Overview
This route is a great example of the island loops that can be found around the Les Cheneaux area. Government Island is a local gem that is tough to reach, but worth the boat ride. Rocks and roots a plenty will greet you along this gently sloping, mostly forested trail.
Description
All campsites are along the shore and allow for pull out for kayakers. If motoring in, we have found the best access with current water levels is along the Government Bay end of the island. There is a sandy landing and tie off trees in abundance.
This route uses a variety of family friendly trails, but be aware that there will be no blazes to assist with navigation. Since the island is fairly small and self contained, it's difficult to get truly lost here, even without blazes. There are two privies at the northern end of the island if needed, and there are many great campsites and picnic tables available.
This loop is a great way to explore the majority of the island, and can be taken as a day trip or as an overnight.
Flora & Fauna
Lots of cedars. Don't disturb the bald eagle nest!
