Family Friendly
A great out and back option with beach access and plenty to entertain the kids along the way.
Overview
This out and back hike has a little bit of everything from Salt Pond (a sandy beach) as well as Drunk Bay and to Ram Head.
Need to Know
No glass or smoking on the beach. Best time to be out on these trails is in the early morning or after the hottest part of the day.
Description
This trailhead is a dirt parking lot with a short trail that leads to Salt Pond (a sandy beach). There is room for about 12-15 cars in the parking lot and the transit (the public bus) runs from the parking lot every hour on the hour from 8-6 pm.
Start your hike on the
Salt Pond Bay Trail which is a dirt road that leads down to
Salt Pond Bay. It ends at a white sand beach with access to Rams Head Point and
Ram Head Trail. There are pit toilets at this location as well as picnic tables, and excellent snorkeling when north shore swell comes in. This a wonderful place to spend the whole day as there is usually a local vendor on most days near the parking lot, pit toilets and trash cans near the beach, as well as picnic tables spread out to enjoy a meal. The beach provides shady areas which are also a perk on hot days.
For the more adventurous, this hike is not over yet! Once past the beach, you'll continue on the
Ram Head Trail, hiking right near the waters edge for a while. The trail then goes into the bush and pops out at a rock beach. Continue on until you see large cairns built marking the correct trail that will take you up to the point. At this point there is no shade to speak of, so come prepared for intense sun and heat - although the wind is a nice relief most the time. The trail comes to a dead end at a tall rocky cliff with spectacular views! Don't forget the camera, this is an unforgettable spot!
Flora & Fauna
Woody and bushy shrub-like plants scatter the landscape with several varieties of cactus. The foliage is much drier on this side of the island.
