The label on old USGS topo maps labels this entire trail and the Castle Pass #749 as the "Boundary Trail." The current Forest Service map lists it differently and is reflected here, terminating at the PCT (Castle Pass) and then the leg from Castle Pass west to Lightning Creek is listed as Castle Pass #749.

This trail is exceptionally beautiful and travels through the Pasayten Wilderness Area. Beginning at the Irongate Trailhead west of Loomis, hikers will head west, covering some of the most spectacular features of the wilderness area until eventually turning into the Castle Pass Trail, and descending out of the Pasayten Wilderness. Solitude, spectacular peaks, shining mountain lakes and incredible geologic features await!

This is just a portion of the longer Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail, and thru-hikers of that trail will greatly enjoy this portion.

Alpine tundra dominates this trail, and visitors will enjoy mountain peaks along the Canadian border. Along the way, there are opportunities to see tungsten mines and possibly grizzlies. There are great peaks on either side of the trail that could be reached by a day-long detour. The trail is fairly well maintained and easy to follow, so navigation on a tour of the area should be straightforward.

On portions of this trail, it is easy to see the Canadian border and perhaps contemplate a trip to the border, as you'll only be a mile away. Cross country travel would be required to reach the border.

It is possible to see bears, deer, elk, and birds along the way.
