While hiking the entire trail may prove too much for children, families can still enjoy the short trip to Buttermilk Falls, located near the parking area.
Description
This interesting route almost instantly gratifies visitors with views of Buttermilk Falls. After taking in views from the base of the waterfall, ascend steep grades on the Buttermilk Falls Trail for rewarding scenery from the top of Buttermilk Falls and then continue on to survey the Delaware Water Gap below.
Starting at the Buttermilk Falls Parking Area, ascend moderately through moss-covered hardwood forests to the top of Buttermilk Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in the state of New Jersey. Take in the peacefulness that comes with watching falling water before gearing up for the second, and far more strenuous, portion of trail leading up a narrow ravine to the ridge top.
Don't be discouraged, however, as the view from atop the ridge is one of the best in the park. On one side, visitors can view the meandering Delaware River winding its way through the river valley, and on the other, the bustling metropolis of Newton, New Jersey.
Flora & Fauna
Mixed hardwood forests dominate the area around this trail, but visitors may be treated to a tall, majestic hemlock every so often.
