The full trail might be a bit much for younger kids, but for those looking for a longer adventure off of Hope Camp Trail, this trail fits the bill.
Description
The Ruiz Trail gives hikers a great opportunity to explore the Rincon Valley Area. The trailhead is located at the north end of Camino Loma Alta with parking at the end of the road, and the trail can be accessed from either the
Hope Camp Trail or the
North Coyote Wash Trail.
From the junction with the
Hope Camp Trail, the Ruiz Trail heads up a short hill before descending gently along the ridge line, heading to the south. From this vantage point, you'll enjoy views of saguaro cactus and other desert vegetation.
At just over a mile and a half, the trail will come to a junction with the
North Coyote Wash Trail on the right. You can turn right to hike the North Coyote Wash to make a great loop, or continue another half mile to the end of the Ruiz Trail which terminates at the national park boundary. Please respect private property and stay on the trail. From here, you can retrace your steps back the way you came.
Flora & Fauna
The park is home to black bear, white-tailed deer, mountain lion, and coati, along with hundreds of birds, reptiles, insects, and amphibian species. You'll also be treated to a stand of giant saguaros, and other desert cacti and vegetation.
