What most visitors to Sequoia National Park don't realize is that, in addition to the magnificent trees, the park holds more than 250 caves. Crystal Cave is the only one open to the public, however, and even then it's only accessible as part of a guided tour. Otherwise the grate over the cave opening is locked. If you think ahead to reserve a ticket for the ranger-led hike, then a visit to this family-friendly destination will round out your trip to Sequoia National Park nicely. The cave is filled with ornate marbled formations and decorated with icicle-like stalactites and stalagmites.

The cave is opens only in the summer months, and it is only accessible with a guided tour. Fortunately, there are plenty of tours each day, but it can get booked pretty fast. Make sure to check the national park website and the Sequoia Parks Conservancy website for reservation info.

This short trip is a great tour for families and anyone looking to see a different side of Sequoia National Park. Wear a sturdy shoes, because it can get slippery inside; also, cave temperatures can be on the cool side, so bring a layer to stay warm.

From the parking lot, follow the guide's directions before embarking on the trail. The trail is just about half a mile each way, and is a constant descent to the bottom (read: uphill return journey). The tour guides don't give much time to sight-see on the way down to the cave entrance because of the tour schedule. However, you'll have plenty of time to rest and take pictures of the cascading waterfalls after the cave tour, on your way back up to the parking lot.
