This is well-traveled trail can be accessed either from the Icehouse Saddle, via Icehouse Canyon Trail #7W07A, or from Thunder Mountain Road 0.1 miles west of the peak.

From the Thunder Mountain Road, the trail drops down to a saddle then begins a steep climb up several switchbacks with shade from white fir, lodgepole and Jeffrey pines. After 1 mile, there is a junction with the Telegraph Peak Trail #7W06A on the left. The trail heads south through a nice forested section then begins a steep drop with limited shade down to a wide saddle. It then climbs up around the west side of Timber Mountain and reaches a high point where there is a junction with the Timber Mtn. Trail #7W06B on the left. It then drops another half mile down to popular Icehouse Saddle and a junction with the Icehouse Canyon Trail #7W07A.

If hiking from the south, the trail will be a net gain, with the biggest climb from Timber Mountan's flanks to Telegraph Mountain. Though this trail is only 3.7 miles in length, the large amount of climbing makes it fairly strenuous. Sun protection and water are a must, as you'll be making your way through an open forest that doesn't provide much in the way of shade, especially on a hot day.

Jeffrey, sugar and lodgepole pines, white fir provide limited shade. Chinquapin, manzanita and buckthorn are the primary ground-covers.
